Mouth ulcers are very common. Chinese medical practitioners deem the ailment stems from “heatiness” in the body, while Western medicine attribute it to viral infections and genetic dispositions. Whatever the cause, mouth ulcers can be very annoying.
If you are someone who is prone to mouth ulcers, you may try all-natural home care remedies that are less abrasive yet provide quick and comfortable relief, as follows:
Aloe vera gel
The aloe vera gel makes an excellent herbal remedy for the skin and body, including the soft tissues in the gums and sidewalls of the mouth, where mouth ulcers develop. The gel feels cool when applied and taste slightly bitter and salty. Known for its anti-aging and rejuvenating properties, the aloe vera gel is also a healing herb that works naturally to soothe mouth ulcers and virtually all types of sores. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera make it deserving of its nickname, the “first aid plant”. The aloe vera gel should also be a mainstay of your home medical kit.
Salt water wash
You can also try an organic mouth rinse in the form of a mild salt solution. Salt is a natural antiseptic that relieves inflammation and also promote healing. For optimum healing effect, you may add dried sage to your salt solution. Simply add two teaspoons of dried sage to boiling water, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in about half a teaspoon of sea salt and stir well. They work great as a mouth rinse after brushing your teeth. Alternatively, gargling with warm salt solution also helps to numb the mouth and relieve you from the pain that mouth ulcers bring.
Coconut milk gargle
Coconut milk can help to kill the bacteria that causes mouth ulcers. This natural therapy is first discovered by Pacific Islanders, whose diet comprises a large amount of coconuts. The coconut-based diet has been found to ward off dental ailments and mouth ulcers, even amongst folks who have never brushed their teeth or use anti-bacterial mouthwash. Gargling natural coconut milk or coconut oil in your mouth for one minute a day is known to reduce frequency of mouth ulcers.
Ice
If you can’t get hold of the other products but need a quick fix for the discomfort and pain caused by the mouth sore, take a cube of ice from the fridge and lather it over the spot. Although it is known to provide temporary relief, there are times when applying ice alone can do the trick.
Of course, if your mouth ulcer condition is very serious and persistent, consult your doctor to make sure it isn’t caused by viral infection or other health problems.
